PlayStation 5 Storage Space Is 667GB In Leaked Images

Leaked photos of the PlayStation 5 have appeared online, and funnily enough, they show that the console has a much smaller storage space than previously stated.

Though the Xbox Series X has the edge when it comes to processing power, the PlayStation 5 is a worthy rival. Boasting a beastly custom AMD Radeon Navi CPU chip, games will flaunt buttery smooth 8K resolutions and entrancing ray tracing. The latter isn't only about looks, chief architect Mark Cerny explained, and will amplify player immersion in the game by applying the same principle to audio. Moreover, the haptic feedback of the DualSense controller will replicate what it feels like to drive over tarmac and muddy tracks, for example, and adaptive triggers will resist the player's actions and even block them totally.

The only odd one out in the list of the PlayStation 5's technical specifications is the custom solid state drive, which weighs in at 825 GB. Though these are much more reliable and efficient compared to garden variety hard drives, that's... not a huge amount of storage from the next generation gizmo. For reference, the base version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is 157 GB, but the innumerable updates and patches since its launch means it now tips the scales at around 200 GB.

Hypothetically, if you played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and only Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, that would be a whole quarter of the PlayStation 5's SSD used up. Listings for compatible SSDs have started to crop up, but they cost a pretty penny, though you would expect that from high-end items like these. The SSD is a major selling point of the PlayStation 5, too, with its capability to read 5.5GB a second of raw data and leave lengthy loading times in the past. However, two photos of the PlayStation 5 in action has raised eyebrows over the actual storage capacity of Sony's console.

These photos, which were sourced from a deleted YouTube video, show that it has 667 GB of space on the SSD available. That counts Astro's Playroom, which will be installed on every PlayStation 5, in that figure. This is definitely less than the advertised 825 GB SSD, and has a lot of players scratching their heads. Thankfully, there are two explanations, so don't click that big red "cancel my pre-order" button.

Explanation number one: this is a dev kit, which has been specifically changed so that developers are able to produce their games and make the most of the technical capabilities. As a result, it might look a little different, and have different innards that are only conducive to testing one game. Retail units would have the advertised 825 GB, because they've been made for consumers who will use their PlayStation 5 for a range of things, from gaming to watching telly.

Explanation number two: the PlayStation 5 does possess 825 GB of storage space, but the operating system uses a chunk of that resource to run the console. Therefore, Sony hasn't circumnavigated the truth on this front, because the whole 825 GB is there. When you pull on a jumper and wear a pair of jeans, these items of clothing aren't actually removed from your wardrobe, never to return. You're just using them to keep warm, which is very important in these chilly months. It's the same situation here. Though I don't think a PlayStation 5 will fit in a pair of jeans.

Still, Sony is yet to acknowledge the leaked photos, which is sending some into a tizzy. We'll update you when the company responds.
