PlayStation 5 Will Feature A Lot More First-Party Exclusives, Sony Confirms

PlayStation's next-gen plans include an "acceleration" of first-party releases, it's been confirmed. In a new report, Sony Interactive Entertainment claimed that it intends to put out a lot more exclusives on PlayStation 5 in response to increased competition in the market.
"Competition from online PC games and players from other industries is expected to continue to intensify," the company wrote (thanks, VGC). "SIE intends to make proactive investments to reinforce content IP, and work to raise brand value, foster communities and user engagement, while enhancing direct to consumer services that get closer to users. To reinforce content IP, SIE will accelerate the enhancement and rollout of its portfolio of exclusive PlayStation titles."
That's essentially a long-winded business-speak way of saying: expect more PlayStation 5 exclusives. This probably isn't the most surprising strategy to many of us, and is sure to be one that works very well indeed for the upcoming PS5. The PlayStation 4 established itself throughout this generation as the console for epic single-player exclusives.
Games like Bloodborne, God Of War, The Last Of Us Part II, and Marvel's Spider-Man have gone on to become critical and commercial smashes. Even the less well-received titles like Days Gone and Ghost Of Tsushima have their fans... and have raked in plenty of cash to boot.
We already know to expect a few PlayStation 5 exclusives in the next year or so. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, and a Demon's Souls remake were all announced a few months back. It's also safe to assume that other sequels are on the way, as well as one or two surprises.
This isn't the first time Sony has reaffirmed its commitment to single-player exclusives going forward. Earlier this year, PlayStation Worldwide Studios boss Hermen Hulst promised that there's plenty more to come for gamers seeking story-driven experiences.
"We're very committed to dedicated hardware, as we were before," he explained. "We're gonna continue to do that. And we're very committed to quality exclusives. And to strong narrative-driven, single-player games. At the same time, we're going to be very open to experimentation, to new ideas. Just trying things out to see what works. I think that's also very much part of the DNA of Worldwide Studios."
More PS5 exclusives probably isn't a bad thing, although there's always the danger that churning them out faster leads to a drop in quality. There's every chance Sony will use Spider-Man: Miles Morales as a model going forward, releasing cheaper games more frequently that are a little shorter in length alongside the larger experiences. I certainly wouldn't be against that.
