PlayStation 5 Won't Support SSD Expandable Storage At Launch

You’re stuck with the 667GB at least for a while

The PlayStation 5 at launch won't have expandable SSD storage says Sony. In an interview with The Verge, Sony has confirmed that PlayStation 5 buyers will have to wait to expand the space they have on the console until a further update despite the console already having the hardware to upgrade.

Although the console will have a slot that can fit M.2 SSDs, using them will be impossible until Sony decides to update the console in that capacity. You'll have the hardware for the job, just not the software until Sony does some tests.

Why though? Why have the capability to expand SSDs but no way to take advantage of it? It's apparently because the console is too fast for some SSDs already out in the wild. Sony wants to make sure that it can do testing to confirm to us all which are compatible, and which aren't. We don't want anyone wasting money on an M.2 SSD that they can't use do we?

The Verge ended up talking to some manufacturers about this to confirm they don't know if their M.2 SSDs are compatible and none of them were able to confirm if their products were useable for the PS5. Sony really hasn't started testing the products to see what works best with its console yet.

Unless you're trying to download Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War three of four times over, it's likely that the 667GB will do you just fine until then. Actual next-gen releases are going to trickle out over the next few months rather than all be ready at launch for the PS5 so as long as Sony doesn't take six months to allow us to add more storage, managing the 667GB we're given will be pretty easy.

Although Sony fans are a little stuck at the moment, Microsoft's already know what they're doing for SSD expansions. Although they'll run at an expensive £220, Microsoft already has a Seagate 1TB Expansion Card ready to plug into the console at launch. Lucky for some, eh?
