Genshin Impact, the action role playing title that captured the hearts and souls of gamers in the autumn of 2020, is getting an unexpected crossover with Horizon Zero Dawn.

From developer miHoYo, Genshin Impact is set in the colourful and boundless world of Teyvat, which is itself split into seven nations that are ruled over by an elemental deity. The player is able to swap between a cast of characters who possess different skills and abilities and are unlockable either through the story or through the game's gacha mechanics. In its first two weeks following launch, it generated more than $100 million in revenue, earning it the title of being the biggest international launch of a Chinese game in history.

However, it hasn't been without its issues. First and foremost, its undeniable similarities to Breath of the Wild actually caused someone to smash up their PlayStation 4 in protest. Then, it was found that words like "Hong Kong" and "Taiwan" are censored within the in-game chat, as well as more pedestrian terms like "enemies" and "words". And, the characterisation of darker-skinned characters as "exotic" and "scary" was perceived to perpetuate damaging stereotypes.

Check out gameplay of Horizon Forbidden West below, which sends our heroine to the ruins of California and pits her against Clawstriders and Tremortusks.

Still, it remains one of the most popular games out there, and now it's got a crossover with one of the most anticipated games of 2021. Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn is on her way to the RPG in update 2.1 for Genshin Impact for free. Furthermore, she's a five star cryo bow user meaning that her arrival in the game is less like her Fortnite skin and more like her Monster Hunter World weapon, armour and Palico crossover.

Details are light on the ground right now, but it does look like Aloy will be an exclusive character for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players. As exciting as this collaboration is, it also shows that even more characters could arrive in Genshin Impact to refresh the offerings for veterans and rookies
