PlayStation Asked To Buy Konami, As Response To Microsoft’s Bethesda Purchase

Probably not for its pachinko machines

In the wake of Microsoft's sensational purchase of ZeniMax Media - and in turn Bethesda, with DOOM and The Elder Scrolls and Fallout and the rest of it all tied up in a bow - which it confirmed yesterday, some gamers have wondered: what's the next move from PlayStation, then, to strike back at this kind of huge IP land grab?

Well, how about buying Konami? This was the response of a few gamers on Twitter at least, who - as Gamerant summarises - thought that picking up the name behind such franchises as Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania, Silent Hill, Bomberman and Snatcher would be a cool move. And sure, those are some Big Names... and Snatcher. But does it make any sense?

Sure, why not. Makes just about as much sense as Microsoft buying up Bethesda. It won't happen, but then again, it's 2020, so we should never, ever, say never. Right? Right. U-turns abound, is the theme of the year.

There's no doubt, though, that Konami isn't quite the powerhouse it was in the 1980s and '90s. It's put out some great gaming stuff recently, including the PC Engine Mini (one of the best mini-consoles around), as well as fantastic Contra and Castlevania anniversary collections. But in terms of new games, it's been pretty lacking. A Pro Evo (sorry, eFootball) season update doesn't make for an attractive portfolio in the here and now. And new pachinko machines with branding based on its popular gaming franchises sorta make us sick, really.

So why not speculate a bit about what a chunk of Sony investment could do for a company like Konami? We're told that there's a new Silent Hill game coming, and that it could be exclusive to PlayStation 5 - at least in a timed capacity. Could that be the first release in a beautiful new relationship between the parties? And Konami the first of the new studio acquisitions that Sony apparently has lined up?

Again, probably not. But NGL, guys, if PlayStation can light a fire under Konami's arse to get the PAL version of Snatcher back into the wild, I will never buy another console again. Maybe. Probably not. But I'll be grateful, is what I'm saying.
