In a report from its most recent investor relations day, Sony has shown that the number of female PlayStation players has snowballed since the era of the original console.

The Game & Network Services Segment of the session, presented by PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan, covers the history of the PlayStation and how these learnings from the past will allow the company to capitalise on the forward momentum triggered by the launch of the PlayStation 5. However, it is cognisant of the impact of the pandemic on the production of the new console and how to supply that demand while still supporting the PlayStation 4.

It's the shortage of semiconductors that has kneecapped not only Sony but a large number of companies that deal in electronics as the corporate giants outbid the smaller scale entities. "We continue to do everything in our power to ship as many units as possible to customers who are waiting for a PS5," said chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki. Still, engagement with the PlayStation 5 has surpassed that of its predecessor, with over 1.5 million more monthly active users in March on the PS5 compared to the equivalent window of time after the launch of the PS4.

The PlayStation 5 was off to a flying start in late 2020, yet the PlayStation 4 won't be cast off its throne so easily, especially with games like these. Check out the cream of the crop in our compilation below.

Talking about "Why We Believe in PS5," the company discussed the demographics of the PlayStation 5's community. It's seen an expansion of enthusiasm for the brand outside of North America, Europe and Japan, calling areas like South America, Africa, and Central Asia "opportunity markets." Indeed, PlayStation is ranked in the top ten most relevant brands in the world, and is described to be "modern and in touch" with what customers want. And, there has been a "growing female interest in PlayStation gaming," with 18% of PlayStation owners compared to 41% of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 owners being women.

As an industry, gaming has changed to become more accommodating of identities outside of the norm, both behind the scenes and on the boxes of AAA titles. Sony and PlayStation have contributed to this with games like Returnal, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, The Last Of Us Part 2 and Gravity Rush that have a female lead as the only option for the protagonist. It bears mentioning that there's still some way to go to ensure that everyone is represented (and positively) in games, but it's good to see that Sony has considered this in its ambitions for the future of PlayStation.
