PlayStation Plus Free Games For September Have Been Revealed

Another month, another round of free games for PlayStation owners via the PlayStation Plus subscription. In a year of topsy-turvy goings on, we can at least rely on Sony to offer up the goods of a couple of free video games to keep us feeling human.

Announced via the PlayStation Blog, players can look forward to getting their hands on Player Unknown's Battlegrounds (that's PUBG to you and me) and Street FIghter 5, both being available to download on Tuesday, September 1st.

PUBG, of course, is widely considered to be the game that kickstarted the hugely popular battle royale genre way back in 2017, before it eventually was dwarfed by the relentless juggernaut that is Fortnite. It started life as a DayZ mod (which was itself an ARMA 2 mod) and quickly rose to fame.

100 players drop into a large map and duke it out in an ever decreasing circle, until only one player, or team, is left standing to be crowned the winner, and take home the chicken dinner. It feels a little superfluous to be explaining these things nowadays, but three or four years ago, this would have all been utter gobbledegook.

Street Fighter 5, then, also feels like a game that needs no introduction. Show me a person alive who hasn't heard of Street Fighter and I'll show you... I guess somebody who doesn't care about video games and their impact on the world. Together we can educate this person.

Street Fighter 5 is the latest in a long lineage of fighting games that has seen developers Capcom tweaking and fine-tuning the gameplay experience and mechanics constantly since the game's launch back in 2016. It should also be noted that the version PlayStation owners get will be the base version of the game, not the fully upgraded (and consider complete) version Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition. So if you find yourself losing sleep over your experience with the game, you'll maybe want to consider ponying up the dough for the complete edition.

Both these games will replace the current crop of PS Plus titles, which are Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered. They'll be vanishing for good on August 31st so act swiftly if you still haven't taken the bait.

Incidentally, it was announced by Sony that Fall Guys has been the most downloaded game in PlayStation Plus history, and publishers Devolver Digital gave that stat the old one-two by revealing that they'd had over 7 million downloads on Steam, also. Sony don't divulge exact download numbers for PS Plus, but I'd be willing to bet a pretty penny that number tops 7 million quite comfortably.
