PlayStation 3 Emulator Now Plays Every Single Game - Over 6000 Of Them

It's taken over a decade, but a team of developers have managed to bring every single PlayStation 3 title to PC through an emulator. What have you done with your Thursday?!

We know that the industry is a shocker for letting old games go into the endless void of obscurity and obsolescence. Consider the couple that found a hoard of sealed editions of rare games, consoles, merchandise and more in an abandoned house, taking stock of a collection that was worth about $100,000. Of course, all games are equal but some are more equal than others, and won't fetch such a hefty price at auction. That doesn't mean they deserve to disappear, though.

"Historically, games haven't really considered themselves as being a cultural industry," explained Iain Simons, director of culture at the National Videogame Museum, in a chat with us. "It's literally baked into their business model that the next game is always the most exciting one, the one you really need to have - and that the previous one is now obsolete. With that underpinning everything, it's easy to see why preservation isn't top of the list of priorities."

That's why it's so fortunate that we see communities dedicated to the preservation of old games of all sorts. They're like pandas but more exciting (not that being more exciting than a panda is a high bar to clear).

Since 2011, the team supporting RPCS3 has worked to ensure that every single PlayStation 3 title is playable on PC. Yesterday, that goal had been completed. "We're delighted to announce that RPCS3 now has a total of ZERO games in the Nothing status!" announced the team through Twitter. "This means that all known games and applications at least boot on the emulator, with no on-going regressions that prevent games from booting. We look forward to emptying out Loadable too!"

That means that more than 6,000 games and applications are able to start while playing on a PC. However, that's about as much as some of them will do, as the "Loadable" category contains the games that do exactly that. Glitches, technical hiccups and other mishaps might be present but then the team's focus moves from simply running these games to running these games smoothly.

On RPCS3, 63.53% of PS3 games are "Playable" on the emulator which is a whopping achievement given the differences between all of these games and the fact that the team volunteers their time and passion to preservation.
