PlayStation has announced a shiny new attachment for its DualShock 4 controller. The new gadget is a peripheral for the standard PS4 controller that adds two back buttons to the pad that can be re-mapped to your liking. It's a feature that many high-end third-party controllers, such as those from Scuf Gaming, offer, and one that's often favoured by gamers who enjoy playing FPS titles at a competitive level.

"Today we're excited to introduce the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment to gamers of all skill levels who enjoy playing competitively," Sony wrote in a blog post. "This new attachment elevates your gameplay by delivering more versatility and performance, while maintaining the comfort and feel of the DualShock 4 wireless controller you've come to love."

"Its sleek design, with two programmable and highly tactile back buttons, allows you to utilize more of your hand to shorten your response time and gives you more flexibility in competitive gameplay."

The DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment (because yes, that really is its full and super-catchy name) is capable of saving up to three different profile setups. A "dedicated button allows you to remap back button inputs on the fly", while an integrated OLED display on the attachment lets you know which profile you've selected and which buttons are currently mapped.

According to PlayStation, the add-on is also compatible with "all of your favourite" PS4 and PlayStation VR games, and is "is built with the ergonomics of the DS4 in mind".

There's no word on a UK price right now, but the PlayStation EU blog states that the Back Button Attachment will launch across the region on February 14th for €30. Expect it to cost around £25, then.

That certainly makes it a cheaper option than buying a high-end third party controllers outright. Those things are not cheap, so it's cool to see Sony has come up with an official alternative for gamers who might want to dip their toe into the waters of competitive play without breaking the bank.

The big question: could this newly-announced back button peripheral for the DualShock 4 come as a standard built-in feature of the DualShock 5? We haven't seen or heard much of the next-gen controller yet, but I'd say it's certainly a possibility.

What we do know, however, is that the DualShock 5 controller will feature haptic feedback (replacing the traditional rumble) and adaptive triggers for a more immersive gaming experience. Yeah, it's not really much to go on, but hopefully Sony will share more next-gen news soon. Especially now that news on the Xbox Series X is out there.
