PlayStation Plus drops extra free download for May

PlayStation Plus drops extra free download for May

PlayStation Plus subscribers can download an extra perk this month, totally free.

It’s been quite a month for PlayStation users. From a plethora of stellar PlayStation Plus Extra games to a lineup of what we can only imagine will be seriously exciting announcements at the PlayStation Showcase tonight (24 May), it’s a fantastic time to own one of Sony’s consoles.

For those out of the loop, those subscribed to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium this month are now able to play some brilliant free games - including Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Humanity, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration and Shadow of the Tomb Raider - as part of their subscription via the Extra-tier game catalogue. Basically everyone’s been banging on about Rift Apart’s inclusion (and for good reason), but seriously, there’s some absolute bangers to be delved into beyond that.

Take a look at our review for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart below.

Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for the Essential-tier lineup. Compared to previous months, the selection of Chivalry 2, Grid: Legends and Descenders failed to please many - some even slated it as “the worst month by far”.

Thankfully, a new surprise freebie has just been dropped for PlayStation Plus members (of all tiers) which might help soften the blow a bit for Essential-tier subscribers. Right now, Final Fantasy XIV Online players can grab an exclusive ‘Aetheryte Additional Free Destination’ reward.

If you’re unfamiliar with Square Enix’s MMORPG, this reward will allow each player to set an additional free fast-travel location in their game, which will remain usable for 30 days after its activation. Normally, players need to either spend in-game currency (Gil) or aetheryte tickets to fast travel unless they’re travelling to their set free destination (everyone has one, besides this reward).

Admittedly, it’s not a mind-blowing freebie, but if you’re already a FFXIV fan (or have been thinking about giving the game a go), it’s definitely worth picking up. PS Plus subscribers have until 1 June to claim it.
