PS5 DualSense Controller Reportedly Works On PS3, For Some Reason

It's very clear to most of us that Sony is intent on leaving the PlayStation 3 in the past, where it belongs. That's not a dig at the classic console at all, by the way, merely an observation. It's a necessity, right? We have to leave the older generations of consoles behind as we embrace the future, and as Sony gears up to support the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, that leaves zero room for the PS3.

Not that Sony had been supporting the PS3 massively of late, mind you. PlayStation Plus stopped offering free PS3 titles nearly a year ago now, and a recent refresh of the browser-based PlayStation Store has done away with PS3 and Vita titles entirely. That's why it's really quite surprising to me that a new post on ResetEra claims the PS5 DualSense controller actually works with the PS3.

As spotted by PlayStation Universe, an image shared by forum member iceblade (see above) seems to show the DualSense plugged in and working with the PS3. According to iceblade, a friend managed to get their hands on the next-gen controller early and was able to try it on the PS3. While they claim the home/PlayStation button on the controller doesn't work, the rest of it functions as a DualShock 3 pad would - both plugged in and wirelessly.

While we've got absolutely no reason to assume somebody would lie about this, the internet is a strange and unusual place. My main concern is that a photo showing a DualSense controller in front of a PS3 doesn't really prove anything - it would have been much nicer to see some kind of video evidence of the two generations working together.

I'm also not entirely sure why the DualSense would work with the PS3 when Sony has already confirmed it won't work on PS4. Then again, this may suggest that Sony could add in some kind of PS4 functionality down the line. We'll have to wait and see.

The PlayStation 5 arrives in the UK on November 19th, which is mere weeks away. I'm excited guys, anyone else excited? Of course you are.
