What an incredible surprise! Insomniac Games just announced a new Ratchet & Clank game for PlayStation 5 - that's in addition to a brand-new Spider-Man game, mind you. Sony really is out here getting its money's worth from this particularl studio, but more power to them.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart looks absolutely bloody gorgeous. You can check out the trailer for yourself below. Unlike the last outing for the lovable Lombax and his robot pal, Rift Apart looks like it's an entirely original game rather than a remake. That's not to say it doesn't feature all the classic sci-fi platforming fun we've come to expect from the franchise, of course.

In fact, it looks like Insomniac has gone all-out on this one, taking advantage of the PlayStation 5 hardware to tell a story that literally spans dimensions. Expect lots of incredible new worlds to explore and - we hope - massive cartoon guns to shoot at bad guys. But enough out of me. Get a little taste of the game in action below.

The first Ratchet & Clank came out for PlayStation 2 way back in 2002 and has spawned well over a dozen sequels in that time. It's naturally cemented itself as a definitive PlayStation franchise, so it feels right for a new entry to be coming to PlayStation 5. Doesn't it? It does. As long as this one doesn't spawn a bang-average animated movie to release alongside it like the last one did, we should be okay.

It's not clear exactly when Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will be coming to PS5, but we can assume that it'll either be released when the console launches - or fairly soon after. Between this and the exciting reveal of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, I'm already pretty much sold on Sony's next-gen console.
