Resident Evil Village might be on its way to current-gen consoles, if Capcom solves the puzzle of porting the game to less powerful hardware.
This announcement arrived during the developer's presentation at Tokyo Game Show 2020. "While Resident Evil Village is being developed specifically for next-generation consoles and PC, we're looking into delivering the experience on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as well," said producer Tsuyoshi Kanda. The game was originally revealed in Sony's June PS5 showcase, and flaunted its frightful detail and haunting world.
In Resident Evil Village, Ethan Winters will be forced to track down Chris Redfield after a tragedy occurs in his and Mia's home. It takes him to the titular settlement, which is buried in snow and surrounded by a forest housing a malevolent entity. What he finds there will define the man that Ethan Winters will become, and with "a greater focus on combat and exploration compared to Resident Evil 7," I'll bet he'll have to get his hand(s) dirty once again.
Before this news broke, it looked like Village would only be possible on the souped-up specs of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (and pretty powerful PCs). However, Kanda's admission has us holding out hope for the game to come to current-gen consoles. "We're looking into it, but we can't make any promises," he added. "However, we will do our best in creating a top-tier survival horror experience on current-generation consoles.
"Hopefully [we'll] be able to share some more good information, but it's really exciting, right? So keep tuned for more information on this front," concluded Kanda. All in all, it's not confirmed at the moment, but Capcom has got an ambition to make this game as accessible as possible with regards to platforms.
In addition, the developer also released a video showing off new gameplay, concept art, and commentary from three members of the team. "Compared to 7, Village definitely has just as much horror - if not more," said art director Tomonori Takano, even though the environments of Village are much bigger than those of the Baker house. "We want the player to walk through and encounter things that make them think, 'Wow, you can even get to this place!', 'I didn't expect to find something like this,' or 'There's so much detail here!'" elaborated director Morimasa Sato.
Resident Evil Village will launch for Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and PC in 2021, and I cannot wait, honestly.
