Sony Considering 'Zombieland' And 'Venom' Director To Helm Uncharted Movie

The real Uncharted movie was the friends we made along the way.

I don't know much, but I feel fairly confident that Sony's live-action Uncharted movie is cursed. Genuinely. I truly believe that somewhere out there, an evil wizard has, for some nefarious/spiteful purpose, used magic to ensure that the movie never gets made. At the start of this year, it was reported that the project had lost its sixth director in 12 years.

Now, Sony Pictures has confirmed that the movie has been delayed to March 5th, 2021. That's only three months back from its previously-planned December 18th, 2020 release date, sure. But at this point I think we're all just expecting that this is a movie that's never getting made, right?

A live-action Uncharted movie has been in some form of development since 2008, and has torn through directors in the same way I rip through a multi-pack of Milky Ways: indiscriminately and with little concern for my health.

Travis Knight (Bumblebee/Kubo and the Two Strings) was the last director to clamber aboard and attempt to steer Uncharted to release. He was enlisted to replace Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), who in turn was signed up in April last year following the departure of Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum).

Knight unfortunately had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Tom Holland - who's set to star as a younger Nathan Drake - has to work on the next Spider-Man flick at the time Knight was supposed to start work on Uncharted, effectively making it impossible for him to be involved with the project.

But Sony isn't going to let a little thing like losing six directors in 12 years get in the way of making the Uncharted movie a reality. It's to be admired, in a way. The search for a new director is well underway at this point, and according to Deadline, Ruben Fleischer is at the top of Sony's list.

Fleischer previous directed the excellent zombie comedy Zombieland, as well as its less-good sequel which came out last year. He was also in the director's chair for Spider-Man spinoff Venom - a movie which was slated by critics but proved an absolute hit at the Box Office.

It's unclear whether Fleischer will agree to join up with this cursed project. Less clear still is whether or not he'll be the guy that finally gets Uncharted over the line and into cinemas. I guess we'll find out for sure soon enough. I'd love to believe he'll be the one to do it and that the movie will be great but... I've had 12 years of hurt. I'm just not that invested in this anymore. I can't be, for my own sanity.
