Sony has its eyes on making VR more party friendly

We've all seen those cruel videos of people scaring friends and family when they're in a VR headset and completely vulnerable haven't we? When someone is full immersed in a gaming experience that we're left out of, it can be quite tempting to tickle them, blow on their neck during a spooky scene, or even backseat game because you're bored. Now, though, it looks like Sony is making plans for you to be able to be involved in PlayStation VR games.

A new patent spotted by IGN shows that Sony is in the process of making new tech that allows an audience to participate in VR titles. Looking at the diagram that was included in the October 2020 filing, it looks like a family or group of mates would be able to decide on actions that happen to a player when they're using a headset which could help or hinder their experience, much to everyone's amusement.

The image shows give participants - one in the VR headset and another four on a sofa. A camera placed on the top of the TV looks at what could be cards or perhaps phones in the hands of the people on the sofa which correspond to a choice on the screen. A sword, a plushie, or a soup ladle are the choices, and the participants have chosen the ladle for the player. It's an example of a party game that includes the headset which is a great idea considering how personal VR headsets usually are.

A VR headset's biggest downfall is probably how single-player focused the experience is. Only one gamer can use it at any time and games as a whole are often the most fun when they're shared with others. This new application of the headset would at least try to bridge that issue in which is pretty neat.

This is only a patent being filed, however, and a recent one at that. It might be a while before we see anything like this hit the market - a VR headset for the PlayStation 5 perhaps, but it's intriguing to see what Sony has its eye on next.
