Sony is over the moon with the news that the PlayStation 5 is now the fastest-selling console they've released in their history. Who wants to bet on the records that the PlayStation 6 will be beating?
I kid, I kid. The PlayStation 5 is yet to celebrate its one year anniversary at this point and the chunk of plastic and circuitry has done a stunning shift for the company. More than 10 million sales have been achieved across the globe, if you want to know the numbers behind the success. "Engagement on the platform is the highest that we've ever seen whichever way you look at it," said CEO Jim Ryan in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. Considering the strong lineup of exclusives from launch, like Demon's Souls and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the accompaniment of an enticing collection as part of PS Plus and PS Now, and some thrilling months ahead with Horizon Forbidden West and God Of War 2, it's been fine and dandy for PlayStation 5 owners. Yet, for those still waiting to get their mitts on the console, the shortages and scalpers at every corner have been driving them round the bend.

Second-hand sellers are a huge problem at the moment - one website crowed that it has sold about 140,000 PlayStation 5 consoles since its launch in November. The scarcity has been born of the low numbers of semiconductors on the market for companies to snap up for products from cars to cameras to computers, and it's possible that things won't recover until 2022 or 2023. Regardless of the doom and gloom, Sony is beaming with happiness over the performance of the PlayStation in spite of the setbacks, and others are noticing.
"The milestone is notable especially considering the supply constraint Sony and the rest of the tech industry operated under over the past year," said Carolina Milanesi, president and principal analyst at Creative Strategies. "It illustrates a few things," continued Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games research at Ampere Analysis. "The PlayStation brand is in rude health having maintained sales momentum during the latter stages of the PS4 cycle driven on by high-quality first-party content; Sony's deep expertise in supply chain management for consumer electronics has enabled it to weather the worst impacts of the pandemic even during the launch of a new product; and the continued commercial viability and strength of the global games console market which reached record levels in 2020."
"This bodes well for this new generation of consoles and their potential in the market," concluded Harding-Rolls. What he said.
