'Spider-Man: Miles Morales' New Trailer Hides A Venom Reference In Plain Sight

The newest trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales tips its cap to Venom, the villainous alien symbiote from Marvel Comics.

It appears for only two moments, so pay attention. In this trailer, Miles is watching compilation videos of Peter Parker's best fighting moves when he receives a text message from his best friend, Ganke Lee. He's congratulating Miles' mother, Rio Morales, on her announcement that she's running for a position on the city's council. Miles replies with another article about the Roxxon Energy Corporation, who aren't pleased with Rio's direct approach to public health and safety. If you put the people first, it's bound to get on a mega-rich conglomerate's nerves, or whatever the kids are saying these days.

Both stories have been written by Mary-Jane Watson, with photos supplied by Eddie Brock. The latter becomes the host of the Venom symbiote, and is symbolically a dark reflection of Spider-Man. The character is originally a journalist on the trail of a notorious serial killer. After tireless effort, Brock exposes the identity of the man he believes to be the murderer, but Spider-Man captures the real killer, and his reputation is torn to shreds. Depressed and vulnerable, the alien symbiote discovers Brock and bonds with him, and they both become Venom.

United owing to a mutual hatred of Spider-Man, Brock and the symbiote wish to enact revenge on the hero, but through noble means, by saving innocent people caught in the crossfire. After more than three decades since his original appearance, the character is now one of the most iconic anti-heroes in Marvel Comics, and there's an Easter egg which mentions Eddie Brock in Marvel's Spider-Man for the PlayStation 4. The "good luck" card is signed by members of The Daily Bugle team, and one of them is Brock, showing that he is present in the game's world.

Whether or not we will see Eddie and/or Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales remains to be seen. The Heist DLC for the 2018 game introduced Black Cat into the storyline, and perhaps Insomniac Games would establish the existence of Venom in its own chapter. However, I think that lots of players would want Venom to be a fully-fledged villain in the main game, as opposed to an optional expansion.

We'll have to hold our horses until November 12th, when Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales arrives for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. And, if you complete Marvel's Spider-Man before the end of the month, you could win a Lego Miles Morales minifigure, courtesy of PlayStation.
