The Last Of Us Part II director Neil Druckmann has teased the possibility of a third installment in the series, just over a week before the hotly anticipated sequel is set to launch on PlayStation 4.

In an interview with British GQ,Druckmann touched on what Naughty Dog's next project could be once The Last Of Us Part II is finally out in the world. While he touched on the possibility of the studio pursuing something completely new, he also said that the team could get straight to work on a follow-up to Part II.

"As you start wrapping things up, creatively there are fewer and fewer responsibilities and my mind can't help but think about the next thing," Druckmann said. "So, yeah, the next thing could be a Part III, the next thing could be some new IP."

While it's far more likely Naughty Dog will want to start work on something a little different after toiling on Part II for so long, it's encouraging to hear that Part III is definitely a possibility somewhere down the road. If nothing else, this kind of confirms there's more story to left to tell in that world.

I've yet to play to play The Last Of Us Part II, although you can read early impressions from our very own Mark Foster right here. I'm not jealous at all. I've also, by some miracle, managed to avoid a lot of the leaks and spoilers that have started being thrown around the internet like weapons. My point is I have no idea what happens to Joel or Ellie, and I have no clue where a third game might go - but I'm already keen to find out.

I like the idea of Naughty Dog ending every PlayStation generation with a new game set in the world of The Last Of Us. The first game was the final display of what the PlayStation 3 could really do when it was pushed to its limits, and from what I've seen the same can be said of The Last Of Us Part II. It'd make for a nice end to the PlayStation 5, years from now, if The Last Of Us Part III did the same.

But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, eh? We've still got Part II to make our way through in just a few short days. I'm pretty hyped to get my hands on it after all this time on June 19th, and I can't wait to see where it leaves the world and characters we love so much.
