The most unbelievable thing about The Last Of Us Part 2 gameplay shown last night was the idea that somebody in 2038 would be playing a PlayStation Vita. I mean sure, society collapsed in 2013 in this universe... but it's still way more likely that if a survivor in this grim post-apocalyptic world was going to play a handheld, they'd be playing a Nintendo 3DS.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. In case you missed it, Naughty Dog treated us to one last look at its upcoming PS4 exclusive in action last night. We learned a few cool new details, got a glimpse at a ten-minute chunk of incredibly violent gameplay, and yes - discovered the strangest Vita product placement in history.

Take a look at the special State Of Play presentation for yourself below. The girl playing the PS Vita is brutally murdered by Ellie, by the way. I'm not sure what kind of message that sends to the few remaining Vita owners out there, but I don't think it's a good one.

The game's director Neil Druckmann explained that The Last Of Us Part 2 takes places several years after the climatic events of the first game. Ellie, now 19, has settled into relative peace with Joel, his brother Tommy, and a community of survivors in Jackson, Wyoming.

Of course peace doesn't last long, and a violent incident inspires Ellie to head out on a quest for revenge. Like the last game, the journey will span seasons and locations, from Jackson to the Midwest. However, the biggest chunk of the game will apparently take part in Seattle, which has been torn apart by two warring factions. There's the well-armed Washington Liberation Front, and the stealthy religious cult known as the Seraphites.

Naturally, Ellie will also have Clickers to deal with. The good news is that, just like in the Left Behind DLC from the original game, we'll have chances to cause distractions and get these separate enemy factions to fight each other instead of us. This gives us the chance to either pick off whatever enemy is left, or simply slip away unnoticed during the chaos.

We learned that Ellie can ride a horse across some of the more open environments, and sail over many of the flooded Seattle streets. There's also a new rope tool that can be used to swing across obstacles and scale terrain, so I guess there's no more wandering around looking for ladders to prop up. Thank God.

The presentation ended with an uninterrupted look at ten minutes of Ellie in action. We got to see her explore an open section of Seattle, using stealth, hand-to-hand, and firearms to cut a bloody swathe through her enemies in search of a girl called Nora. Make no mistake: this is looking to be a seriously brutal game that clearly wants you to feel like a bastard with every life you take.

You can read our review of The Last Of Us Part 2 on June 12th, so keep your eyes peeled for it if you want to hear our full thoughts on Joel and Ellie's latest adventure.
