Naughty Dog might be best known these days for the critically-acclaimed gritty survival adventure The Last Of Us, or the blockbuster Uncharted franchise, but we'll always remember it as the studio that gave the world Crash Bandicoot.

It seems slightly insane to me that Naughty Dog has managed to evolve from a team that developed brightly-coloured platformers about collecting fruit and smashing crates to a respected studio currently working on one of the most-anticipated, darkest video game sequels of all time in The Last Of Us Part 2, but the team has never forgotten where it came from.

If you've played Uncharted 4, you'll probably remember the wonderful reference to the original Crash Bandicoot. Nathan Drake and Elena sit down on the sofa together after dinner and blast through a recreation of a level from the PlayStation classic. It's a brilliant moment that deftly establishes Nathan and Elena's quiet homelife before all the explosions and death starts, and also pays tribute to Naughty Dog's roots.

The good news is that it seems Naughty Dog plans to continue this tradition with The Last Of Us Part 2. There is indeed at least one reference to Crash Bandicoot, but it's not quite as wholesome as a night of video games round Mr Drake's house.

According to various publications who got to go out to LA and spend a bit of time with a playable demo of The Last of Us Part 2, there's an incredibly NSFW reference to the 90s platformer tucked away towards the start of the game. Obviously don't read on if you want to discover it for yourself - you've been warned.

Okay, so in the demo, Ellie and Dina are out on patrol when they stumble across another survivor's den - one packed with weed and some old VHS porn tapes. Of all these tapes, one in particular stands out as a clear reference to Crash Bandicoot: a dirty old VHS brilliantly named "Smash Brandi's Cootch." I'm really not making this up.

Fortunately, Ellie and Dina neglect to give it a spin and continue with their adventure. I don't know who at Naughty Dog came up with such an outrageously disgusting pun, but I think they need a raise.

It remains to be seen if The Last Of Us Part 2 contains any more, hopefully more family friendly, references to previous Naughty Dog games, but given that it's set to be the studio's biggest, most ambitious title yet, I'm certain there'll be plenty of secrets to uncover when the game arrives February 21, 2020.
