PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has told CNET (via Gamespot) that pre-order figures for the forthcoming The Last Of Us Part II are tracking at a record-breaking rate - reaching figures that could put the company's previous PS4 exclusive record-setter, Marvel's Spider-Man, in the shade.

Spider-Man racked up over a million pre-orders ahead of its release in September 2018, and it went on to sell 3.3 million copies in its first three days of retail. Ryan has claimed that, in Europe at least, Naughty Dog's June 19th-due sequel to its critically acclaimed 2013 title is ahead of where Spider-Man was, this far out from its release.

Ryan didn't provide CNET with any numbers, but a quick check on Amazon in the UK shows us that the limited-edition physical release of The Last Of Us Part II is the top game on the all-format gaming pre-order chart, and the limited-edition DualShock 4 controller and TLOU2-themed PS4 Pro are at three and four, respectively. The regular, 'special' edition of the boxed game is at number seven. Ergo: a lot of people have put their money down for this one, already.

Confirming that The Last Of Us Part II will run on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Ryan added that "we hope this'll be a defining game for this generation" - i.e. the 'outgoing' one. Which would mirror the success and status of The Last Of Us, which pretty much represented the first-party swansong for the PlayStation 3 (releasing just a few months before the PS4's arrival), and stands out as one of the console's finest titles, too.

We got a decent look at The Last Of Us Part II last week, during a special State of Play stream. It showed off a chunk of gameplay set in Seattle, where Ellie has to contend with two rival human factions as well as the infected ranks. It sure looked brutal, but then, why would we expect anything else of this unflinching series? Still not over that Vita cameo, either.

We've been playing The Last Of Us Part II here at GAMINGbible, and our preview of the game will be live on the site, and on Facebook, very soon. So do check that out - unless you're one of these people who has a problem with a game they've not played yet based on a few story leaks, and who will, without fail, express this through tiresome memes on our socials. In which case, go away.
