I'm going to level with you: I don't think we're ever getting a new Ape Escape game. At least, we're almost definitely never getting a brand-new one.

You need only consider the unfortunate facts. For one, it has been well over a decade since the last proper entry in the anarchic monkey-hunting series. It's also worth noting that 2019 - the 20th anniversary of the series - came and went without so much as a tease. Oh, and earlier this year Sony shut down Japan Studio - the developer who actually made the Ape Escape games. The forecast is cloudy, with no chance of monkeys.

Fortunately, we can always rely on the fans to do what the publishers won't. And since Sony won't give us the Ape Escape remake we so desperately crave, one fan has created an unofficial "PlayStation 5" version of the original PlayStation classic for us to ogle.

Reddit user YahyaDann shared their impressive creation over on the PlayStation Subreddit, showing the remake running alongside the original game. They explained that the brief level recreation was designed and made using Unreal Engine 4, and it certainly looks every bit as good as good as we'd want an actual Ape Escape remake to look. It's bright, fun, and colourful. Just perfect.

"This fan remake is based on the classic Playstation game Ape Escape, a 3D platformer where the player traverse several different environments to capture monkeys who have gone back in time and are causing trouble everywhere," reads the official description.

"This was created as a challenge to see how a Ape Escape would look if it was created for today's consoles, like the PlayStation 5."

What's even better is that you can actually download this demo right now and play it for yourself, although YahyaDann has stressed that this one level is all there is or ever will be. To be fair, remaking an entire game from scratch would no doubt be exhausting work for one person, and what they have achieved is already incredible enough.

If you're interested, you can download the Ape Escape remake from here. Happy hunting!
