Sony hasn't announced any limited edition PS5s, but they should definitely opt for this one.

Don't get me wrong: the PlayStation 5 is a beast. But, it is a beast that only comes in one coat, which is a wonderfully wintery white. One might argue that, like an arctic stoat, the PS5 must adapt to survive and offer us a small number of colours to choose from. Fingers crossed that Sony hears our pleas, and that it opts for this enviable PlayStation 2-themed style.

Seriously, look at it. It's inspired by the limited edition PlayStation 1-themed PlayStation 4 console, released six years ago to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the launch of the original machine. These were also studded with teeny tiny symbols, like the panels of the PlayStation 5, and had a stamp which showed the number of the one that you had bought (only 12,300 consoles were made).

But, there's a certain je ne sais quoi to this themed PlayStation 5. The curve of the shell, the subtle contrast of the shades of grey, the muted colours on the buttons of the DualSense. It's simply splendid, I say. If Sony did catch wind of this concept, and if it liked what it saw, then we would expect to see an official PlayStation 2-themed PlayStation 5 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of that console's launch in 2030. Oh. That's a whole decade away.

Alternatively, if Sony were to release a PlayStation 1-themed PlayStation 5 to honour the 30th anniversary of that machine, then it would hit the shelves in 2024. That's much more sensible. Here's hoping that Reddit user whattheefth is brainstorming another design to represent the legacy of the original console on its most modern iteration.

Additionally, perhaps in 2024, there will be enough PlayStation 5s to go around. The pandemic has led to global turmoil in the manufacturing and freighttage industries, causing short stocks for every major retailer. The demand for the consoles crashed online sites, and "grinch bots" snapped up what there was with their advantageous software. In spite of this, the PlayStation 5 secured the most successful launch in the company's history, and retailers have retaliated against scalpers by cancelling illegitimate orders. If you're waiting to get your hands on one, it's looking like it will be early 2021 when Sony releases new stock, so watch this space for announcements.
