'Titanfall 2's' Playerbase Rockets On PlayStation 4 After Appearing On PS Plus

Some well-deserved love for an underrated gem.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Titanfall 2 didn't get anywhere close to the amount of love it deserved. When the game first released in 2016, it was an immediate hit with those that played it. The EA-published shooter controlled like a dream, and paired an unforgettable single-player campaign with some of the best multiplayer action of that year.

The problem was that nowhere near enough people actually picked the damn game up to experience it for themselves. Titanfall 2'sdisappointing sales have since largely been attributed it to EA's inexplicable decision to release the game in between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

It was heartbreaking to watch such a genuinely great game go unnoticed by so many, especially when it quite clearly had the potential to be so much bigger than it was.

Respawn Entertainment has become a much more recognised and beloved studio in 2019 thanks to the massively popular battle royale Apex Legends and single-player Star Wars adventure Jedi: Fallen Order... but there are those of us who always knew what a truly special team they were, and will always fly the flag for Titanfall.

That's why I'm so happy to be able to share some good news with all the Titanfall 2 lovers out there. The oft-neglected shooter was recently announced as one of the free PlayStation Plus games for December 2019, and its inclusion as part of the subscription service has given the game a well-deserved boost on PS4.

According to Reddit, the Titanfall 2 playerbase on PS4 has been well and truly revitalised. Before hitting PS Plus, the shooter would manage to bring in around 1,500 players on a good day. Now? We're seeing highs of around 90,000. That's astounding.

If you've ever considered checking out Titanfall 2 for yourself, there might never be a better time. Besides being free on PS4, a booming playerbase surely makes for a much more engaging multiplayer experience. I haven't played in years, but I fully intend to return to it tonight.

It's unclear whether this is a flash in the pan, or if the game will be able to sustain this unexpected boost in players for a longer period of time. Either way, it's just great to see Titanfall 2 getting some love after years of neglect. As EA heads back to Steam in the new year with more old games, I can't help but wonder if the shooter's fortune will only improve further. Let's hope so.
