A new photo of the Uncharted movie has been shared to social media, and it shows that Nolan North dropped by the set to shake hands with Tom Holland.

Originally announced in 2008, the project has been through the wringer over the past twelve years. Directors like Shawn Levy, David O' Russell, Dan Trachtenberg, and Travis Knight came and went, and when it finally got the green light to start shooting, it was shut down on day one. The pandemic meant that the film was once again put on hold, even though Columbia Pictures moved its release date to July 2021. Fortunately, filming was resumed in July 2020, with Tom Holland playing Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg in the role of his mentor, Sully.

Understandably, we haven't seen a lot of the movie while it's been in production. However, in these new photos posted by Nolan North, we've not only gotten a look at the two actors rubbing shoulders together, but also some props dotted around the sets. North, who voices the video game version of Nathan Drake, is very enthusiastic about Holland's portrayal of the wise-cracking adventurer, and says he's "absolutely smashing it." He even adds that watching Holland's Drake is like "looking in a mirror," and he's "proud" to see him continue the legacy of the games. Very sweet.

The background of the photo appears to be a beach, or possibly a man-made one for the purposes of filming. We don't know a huge amount about the story of the Uncharted movie, only that this will tell the tale of a younger Drake at the beginnings of his treasure-hunting career. Perhaps, he washes up onto a beach after a storm wrecks his ship, a la Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Or, he's strolling along the beach, waiting to find Sully at a bar before heading off on a journey together. Additionally, there's a photo of a glistening artefact or key embedded in a wooden door, at the bottom of a set of stone steps. This, plus a photo depicting the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in an appropriately aged book, seems to suggest that the daring duo will be exploring somewhere in South America.

Holland also posted a picture of himself as the legendary treasure hunter fully kitted out to his own Instagram account and, we've gotta say, he absolutely looks the part.

All in all, it's promising news for the progression of the adaptation, which had languished in development hell for such a long time. Holland also quote-retweeted the photos with a cheeky caption: "Do you think Sony would be pissed if I spontaneously uploaded a first look picture. I got Nolan's approval so I guess they can't fire me now." Watch this space for any new photos that appear on Twitter, and we'll keep you in the know.
