Unannounced ‘Star Wars: Project Maverick’ Title Discovered On PSN

Hello there!

Mark Foster

A Twitter bot designed to scrape PSN (PlayStation Network Store) may have dredged up something very interesting: a brand-new Star Wars title that is, as of yet, unannounced.

The game - titled Star Wars: Project Maverick - is currently hidden on the store, but it's causing a bit of commotion amongst the Star Wars fanbase, chiefly because this is the first anybody has ever heard of it. No doubt EA aren't too chuffed with the fact it's leaked, if indeed it is their work. In fact you might say, it's something of a... Phantom Menace... for them? I'll see myself out.

While that information on its own is rather tenuous, I'm sure you'll agree, this particular Twitter bot has had some success in the past when it comes to unearthing hidden games. It discovered the existence of both Resident Evil 3 and the Final Fantasy VII demo before they were officially announced, so this leak does hold some water.

But what exactly could Maverick be? Well, we do have some clues. Before we wander firmly into speculation territory, check out this image the bot found alongside the listing.

That's a big ol' Star Destroyer staring down a squadron of X-Wings, back-dropped by lava and towering, black structures or rocks. Can anybody say Mustafar? Also, the astute among you will notice that that is a Galactic Empire-era Imperial class Star Destroyer, and those are T-65 model X-Wings, which would place the game's setting around the time of the original trilogy.

If indeed this is Mustafar, there's a good chance we're going to be flirting with Fortress Vader - Darth's personal getaway, expanded upon in the VR game Vader Immortal.

There's also the chance that this will be a follow-up to Immortal, or even some kind of VR experience and not strictly a game. Notice the lack of EA's logo and the Solo: A Star Wars Story style lettering? It could be a totally new spin-off in its own right.

We know that EA Motive are currently working on a Star Wars game, teased to be a "smaller, more unusual" title, and Respawn have said that there won't be any DLC for the recently released Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. To be honest, though, the art style we're seeing here doesn't really fit with that of Fallen Order anyway, so we can probably rule out another outing for Cal Kestis and friends, at least for now.

If we're dreaming for a moment here, would it be beyond the realms of possibility that this could also be a remake, or new title, in the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron or X-Wing vs TIE Fighter franchises?

Maverick could be a working name that doffs its cap to Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun, a movie focused around dog fighting and camaraderie between pilots.

As pointed out by the guys over at The Sixth Axis, games usually get a listing a few months ahead of their release, so there's a very good chance Project Maverick could be our first sighting of a next-gen Star Wars game - which, I gotta tell you, is beyond exciting. They also expertly remind us that EA said more Star Wars games are in the pipes, but we shouldn't expect to see anything much before 2022. Could be one for E3, so watch this space. Haha, space.
