Next-Gen Consoles Are So Massive That IKEA Has Made Models For Furniture Shoppers

So, here’s to things that console.

Yeah, you've seen how tall the PlayStation 5 is, and you've poked fun at the blocky and fridgey design of the Xbox Series X. But, do you know how they'll fit into your TV storage cabinet? Will they slide into the shelves with ease, or will it be a tight squeeze? IKEA's got you, with these cardboard replicas of the consoles on offer in their stores.

Both Microsoft and Sony have leaned into the ridicule over the size of their consoles, with the former company producing real working fridges in the style of the Xbox Series X. Come on, as soon as you saw Snoop Dogg posing with his very own gaming fridge, you know you wanted one too. It taps into that primeval part of the brain that delights in the absurd, I think. In addition, the Xbox Series X wasn't always destined to be blocky but beautiful, and there were some slimmer and more stylish iterations in the mix before the version we know now was selected.

Conversely, Sony has stood by the imposing elegance of the PlayStation 5's design, even after the internet ripped into the odd curves and its ludicrous stature. It was compared to the Eye of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings, internet routers, various characters from various animes, and even a duck. Similarly, the DualSense was not spared the heat, and players picked up on the eerie likeness of it to a white Xbox One Elite controller wearing a spaghetti strap top. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

In November 2020, social media was flooded with excited photos and videos of people showing off their prizes. After all, it was and still is very hard to get your hands on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, and prices stay sky-high thanks to the stratospheric demand... and to those nefarious scalpers seeking to scam unknowing customers. If you are lucky enough to nab one, the last thing you want to learn is that your storage units aren't the right size, and you'll need to fork out for a new one in order to place the console in your living room.

These mockups actually mock the shape and size of the consoles, too. "Which IKEA media storage unit will be able to fit my new, meme-ishly oversized, game console?" reads the text across the "PS5." Indeed, commenters on the photo which was shared to Reddit, said how they'd been surprised by the heftiness of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. "I have a tv stand with four shelves, not including the top that the TV actually sits on.

My PS5 has to sit next to the TV because I don't want to lie it flat. Oh first world problems, why have you forsaken me?" wailed ALifeSpent. Other users said that they've had to hide their PS5 behind their TV while they work out what to do, whereas some have taken tools to their existing stands and literally built a solution. Hopefully, these fake cardboard consoles will prevent headaches, and they won't even cost you $400!
