PlayStation and Xbox accidentally reveal when we'll get new consoles

The next generation of consoles won't be releasing for a very long time - according to Microsoft, it'll be at least another six years.

It’s now been over two years since the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, if you can believe it. It doesn’t really feel like it when you consider how hard it’s been to get hold of these things, especially at the start. Things do seem to be easing now though - it was recently reported that scalpers are apparently starting to lose interest in the PS5 and about time, too.

Anyway, if you were unable to grab a new-gen console at launch, fear not - it sounds like the devices have many, many more years of life in them. As reported by VGC, it seems that the release window for the next generation of Xbox and PlayStation consoles has been revealed.

As part of discussions with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority regarding Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision, the regulator voiced concerns about the fairness of the deal, and if PlayStation will actually be able to compete if it goes through. The CMA specifically noted: “This impact is likely to be felt especially at the launch of the next generation of consoles, where gamers make fresh decisions about which console to buy.”

Microsoft, however, claimed that the next-gen console release is years away, anyway: “The Parties [Microsoft and Activision] do not dispute that some portion of gamers are likely to re-assess their console ownership at the start of a new generation,” the company responded. “But they also note that this is an event that only occurs approximately every eight years. […] The next new generation of consoles are not expected to be released before the fall of 2028 at the very earliest.”

So, it sounds like we have at least another six years of the PS5 and the Xbox Series consoles ahead of us - imagine all the new games that are going to come out in that time, too. Maybe even GTA VI will be among them. We can only hope.
