PlayStation’s Free PS3 Throwback Is A Huge Hit With Fans

A Re-Reckoning

PlayStation Plus subscribers are not an especially easy group of people to please. It’s understandable, to be fair. Each month Sony has the hard job of dropping a lineup of free games that manages to meet the needs and specific tastes of thousands upon thousands of gamers.

AAA games are always a safe bet, but what happens when it’s a big game subscribers already own? Smaller games can be hit and miss, while sports games, racers, and sims? Well, they’re just not for everyone.

And so it is that Sony often fails in its attempts to keep everyone happy. The last few months, for example, have not gone down so well. This month, though? This month the free bonus PlayStation VR games have been a big hit with fans, as has one delightful - and unexpected - PlayStation 3 throwback.

Kingdoms Of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is a PlayStation 4 remaster of a criminally underrated 2012 action-RPG. It has some serious talent working on it, too! Fantasy author R.A. Salvatore created the in-game lore, while Spawn creator Todd McFarlane handled much of the artwork. Oh, and Ken Rolston, the lead designer of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, served as executive designer.

The game itself wasn’t the most well-received at the time, but it’s a great little adventure that action RPG fans everywhere should definitely check out. Fortunately, PlayStation Plus is allowing users to do just that.

Over on the PlayStation Plus subreddit, players new and old are sharing their love for Kingdoms Of Amalur

“One of my absolute favorite games for PS3,” remarked one user.

“Same. I honestly thought I would hate it and it would feel really dated but it just works,” agreed another.

“The nostalgia in this title is on another level,” another still chimed in. “Thanks for the tip, played it last on PC when it came out, I'm having quite a blast currently.”

While a lot of newcomers still seem a little unsure as to whether or not they should dive in, the message seems fairly clear: If you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you’ll definitely want to try out Kingdoms Of Amalur: Re-Reckoning this month.
