PlayStation's latest free game is one of 2021's most hated releases

Every month without fail there’s at least a few people out there who hate one or all of PlayStation Plus’ monthly Essential tier offerings. I mean, you can’t really blame them - when you’re paying for a subscription service, obviously you’re going to hope to be given some games you’ll actually enjoy.

With that in mind, there’s no doubt that one of this month’s freebies is going to cause quite a stir. In case you missed it, March’s Essential tier lineup was revealed far earlier than usual during February’s State of Play. From 7 March to 3 April, subscribers will be able to claim Battlefield 2042, Minecraft Dungeons, and Code Vein.

You already know which one of those is going to be contentious, don’t you? When Battlefield 2042 released in 2021, it was incredibly buggy. I’m still haunted by the visual glitches. What’s more, it was claimed that the game released missing tonnes of content - according to prominent insider Tom Henderson, the title was originally supposed to include earthquakes, fire tornadoes, tsunamis, and volcano eruptions, but “due to lack of time, they needed to just focus on the twister”.

It took just five months for the game to drop below 1000 players for the first time, which speaks for itself. All in all, it’s had a very rough time, and it’s still haunted by its poor reputation, although many would argue that the post-launch updates it’s received have improved the experience.

We’ll have to wait and see how it actually goes down with PS Plus subscribers, though - back in January, many were initially quite negative over the fact that Fallout 76 was included in the monthly freebies, but a number of gamers took to Reddit after it became available to express how much they were enjoying it.

Subscribers have until 6 March to claim February’s Essential tier freebies, which are Evil Dead: The Game, OlliOlli World, Mafia: Definitive Edition, and the Destiny 2: Beyond Light DLC.
