I’ll tell you what, I know a lot of people who would do some incredibly questionable things to see a third Portal game become a reality. It’s now been over a decade since Portal 2 graced our screens, and given that it was recently announced that a collection of the first two games will soon be coming to the Switch, it really doesn’t seem like Valve has a plan to follow the series up any time soon. Well, unless you count the free tech demo for the Steam Deck, Aperture Desk Job, which at the very least is set in the Portal universe? Hey, it’s something.

Well, even if Valve have seemingly left the series for dead, that doesn’t stop the fans from working on some spectacular stuff themselves. As reported by DSOGaming, one artist, Alfred Beddow (Alf Does Stuff on YouTube) has shared a video showcasing their Unreal Engine 5 remake of Portal’s first environment, and it looks fantastic.

Before we get into it, be sure to check out the trailer for Aperture Desk Job below.

“Made for a university project, each asset was recreated from the ground up with new models and textures,” they wrote in the video description. “Creative liberty was taken in some aspects to improve the fidelity of the models as the originals could be of very low quality and hard to replicate.

“Some assets such as the walls and doors [took] inspiration from Portal 2. I admit it's not perfect and is missing a few things but I was on a time crunch and unfortunately didn't have time to do everything.”

I think we can all agree that they’re being modest, though, because the shiny updated assets look incredible - take a look yourself below. Although this isn’t a full remake of the game, the artist has said that there’s a real possibility of developing it into one if people are interested.

Others in the YouTube comments have been sharing their support: “Amazing work! Honestly, you hit the vibe of Portal 1. I love your texture and material work!” wrote devander. “This looks awesome keep up the great work,” added M Niakan.

At the moment, this isn’t a playable thing that you can download, as Beddow’s work is still yet to be marked. However, they confirmed in the comment section that it will be downloadable later this summer, so be sure to look out for that if you’re interested.
