Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time remake development completely scrapped

Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time remake development completely scrapped

Ubisoft's Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time remake has been scrapped completely, as devs will begin again.

If you’ve been waiting for an update on Ubisoft’s remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, you’re in luck because we finally have one. That’s about where the luck ends though because according to sources, the remake has been scrapped entirely in its current form.

A remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was originally announced all the way back in 2020 with a planned January 2021 release window. Clearly, that release was a tad overambitious. The game was eventually delayed to late 2021, and then delayed again to an unspecified date in 2022. In June of last year, those who had pre-ordered the game (an optimistic move) began having their pre-orders cancelled signalling bad news. Now, it’s believed that the project has been scrapped and will begin from the ground up.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane and look at the original reveal trailer for the remake.

As reported by Push Square, the project has returned to the “conception” phase which essentially means that they’re starting from scratch, so don’t expect to see the game at next month’s Ubisoft Forward showcase. Instead, I’m guessing we’ll see updates on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and the infamous Skull & Bones.

You may recall that last year, the remake switched developers. Ubisoft wrote, “The development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake will now be led by Ubisoft Montréal. We’re proud of the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Montréal will benefit from their learnings as the new team will continue the work to deliver a great remake.”

Producer Jean-Francois Naud recently added (via Push Square), “It’s still in an early stage, and players should not expect to hear more about the game this year, but rest assured that we’re all putting our strengths and heart into this project.” Is The Sands of Time going to replace Skull & Bones as Ubisoft’s resident mythic unreleased project? It sure feels likely.
