New PS5 system update is freezing consoles, players warn

If you’re a PlayStation 5 owner, you’ll be faced with an update today. Rolled out globally, the new update introduces some long-awaited features but you may want to hold off for a little while. Some users have warned that their consoles have started freezing since downloading the update.

The PlayStation 5 has certainly hit the headlines as of late. First up, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan announced that the PS5 shortage had finally ended but then we all found ourselves in a ruckus over whether storing your console vertically might be killing it. I’ll admit, I’ve always stored mine vertically and I don’t plan on changing it but thankfully, the potential problem may not pose as big of a threat as it was originally assumed. The new update is causing an issue.

In case you missed it, the version 22.02-06-50.00 update addresses the performance of the system - although it doesn’t note exactly what this entails - plus in preparation for the release of the DualSense Edge controller, new support has been integrated. The DualSense Edge allows users to set up a number of profiles, each with its own customised controls. The problem is, some users have experienced malfunctions since downloading the update.

As reported by PlayStation Lifestyle, some players are being signed out of games to accept new PlayStation Network terms and conditions. Being booted out mid-game is causing instability in some consoles, particularly if it’s an online game, hence the freezing. Don’t panic though. There is a very easy and quick fix.

If you’re yet to accept the new T&Cs, sign out of your PSN account as soon as you load up your console then sign back in. You’ll be met with the new T&Cs which you can accept and then you won’t be bothered during your gaming session. If you use the PS App, you’ll have automatically been signed out and can also accept the T&Cs here. See, nothing to worry about.
