The canine motion capture actor for Cain the dog in Red Dead Redemption 2, whose real name was Einstein, has passed away at the age of 13, his owner has confirmed.
In Red Dead Redemption 2, Cain is a stray dog who wanders into the Van der Linde gang’s camp during the game’s third chapter. As PC Gamer reports, his real-life actor, Einstein, belonged to the Red Dead Redemption 2 animator, Jason Barnes, who described him as “one of a kind” in an Instagram post announcing the sad news.
“You were more than just a dog; you were a legend,” Barnes wrote. “Your intelligence and unwavering loyalty made you stand out above all other pups. You were there to comfort me when I was sad, to celebrate with me in moments of joy, and to lend a listening ear when I needed someone to confide in. I know people say dogs can't understand but there was something about your eyes that seemed to counter the idea.

“It wasn't just your intelligence and loyalty that made you extraordinary. Your spirit touched the hearts of all those who had the privilege of crossing paths with you,” he continued. “Your warmth and affection were boundless, and your love for life and play was infectious. You taught us the value of living in the present moment, embracing each day with enthusiasm and to find joy in the simple things.
“Though our time together has come to an end, your memory will live on forever. Red Dead Redemption 2 may immortalise you as Cain, but it is the memories we created together that truly preserve your spirit. The lessons you taught me about loyalty, love, and living life to the fullest will never be forgotten.”
Speaking to PC Gamer, Barnes said that Einstein, who he rescued from a shelter when he was just a puppy, was known as the “best dog” in Rockstar Games’ New York office. The Blue Heeler was expected to live into his 20s, but sadly died of cancer.
