Red Dead Redemption 2 fan quotes Dutch on their college essay

I don’t know about you but sometimes video game quotes just speak to me on a personal level. As I’m writing this, I have a quote from Final Fantasy 14 tattooed on my arm so believe me, I get it. However, it seems I'm not the only one as one student recently quoted Red Dead Redemption 2’s Dutch van der Linde in their college essay.

With Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 cementing itself as a master of storytelling and boasting a beautiful narrative, it is no surprise that players experienced a heartbreaking and profound experience when it was released five years ago. As a result, the title has been the subject of many video game analyses over the years with fans exploring its complex characters and interpretations of real-life issues. However, one person has taken it to the next level by incorporating Red Dead Redemption 2 into their academic work.

A Reddit user known as Immediate_Fox1930 took to the platform to share an excerpt of their recent college essay which included a quote from Dutch van der Linde himself. “I quoted Dutch on my college assignment,” they wrote. The snippet itself reads, “I want to quote a fictional character from one of my favourite games of all time... He says and I quote, “It’s man so in love with greed... he has forgotten himself and found only appetites.””

Although some took to the comments to provide ‘constructive’ criticism on the essay itself, others were happy to see somebody take inspiration from the much-loved game and even shared their own memorable lines. Using Red Dead Redemption 2 in everything from critical analyses to college essays is testament to an incredible game that is still as popular now as it was back in 2018. With the title still hiding secrets that are being found to this day, it is no surprise people are still finding ways to talk about it.
