While critic reviews for Resident Evil 4’s highly anticipated remake were overwhelmingly positive, the user scores on Metacritic tell a very different story. Why? Apparently, the game is too “woke”. I’m as confused as you are.
Review bombing is an unfortunately common occurrence nowadays. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and no game can be universally loved by everyone, review bombers will tar games’ scores by giving them the lowest possible rating en masse. Often, this is because the title includes content that they don’t like, or in this case, has removed content that they liked a bit too much.

At the time of writing, Resident Evil 4’s remake has a critic score of 93 for its PS5 version, and 91 for its Xbox Series X version. Meanwhile, the user scores are currently 6.8 on PS5 and 4.5 on Xbox Series X. In fact, there are significantly more negative user reviews on Xbox right now than there are positive ones.

So, what’s going on? As Kotaku reports, some players claim that the remake is just too “woke” compared to the original version. What does that mean in this context? Well, some are upset by the fact that the remake doesn’t allow players to see Ashley Graham’s underwear by looking under her skirt. Gaming is ruined forever. Not. Others have slated the game as “cringe” compared to the 2005 version.
Some have also been criticising Ada Wong’s voice actress for her performance in the game. In the original title, the character was voiced by Sally Cahill, but the remake instead stars Lily Gao, who also portrayed Ada in the 2021 film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Gao has deleted the majority of her posts from her Instagram account following the backlash.
Negative Metacritic user scores aside, Resident Evil 4 is on track to be a strong game of the year contender this year. We’ll have to see how it fares against the likes of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
