'Resident Evil - Code: Veronica' Remake Looks Gorgeous, Releasing This Year

It feels like the Resident Evil series is finally back on track. After a rough few years where it seemed like Capcom really didn't know what to do with the survival horror franchise (Operation Raccoon City? What were they thinking?), the company took a step back and reminded itself what people love about Resident Evil in the first place: the horror.

Newer instalments like Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village have worked beautifully alongside gorgeous remakes like Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3.

Now, an unofficial fan remake of the 2000 classic Resident Evil - Code: Veronica looks set to continue the run of well-made blasts from the past in stunning fashion.

Check it out in action below:

Inspired by 2019's Resident Evil 2 remake, this new, fan-made version of Resident Evil - Code: Veronica boasts upgraded visuals, overhauled combat, and a brand-new over-the-shoulder third-person camera. The project has been in the works for a few years now, and the team of dedicated fan developers explain over on their website that the plan is to release it for free in 2022 across three separate chapters.

Unfortunately, the process of developing and releasing fan games (even when not for profit) can be a complicated one. As much as we'd love this project to see the light of the day, I'm not entirely sure Capcom will be all that thrilled about its existence. It did, after all, shut down a Resident Evil 2 fan remake a few years back - although that was because the company was working on an official version.

Assuming Capcom has no intention to remake Resident Evil - Code: Veronica itself, why not let these guys crack on? They clearly know what they're doing, and it's no secret that the fans desperately want a remake of this particular entry more than most. Let's hope this is one of the few fan remakes that works out, eh?
