'Resident Evil 1' Unreal Engine 5 Remake Is A Thing Of Beauty

'Resident Evil 1' Unreal Engine 5 Remake Is A Thing Of Beauty

A team of fans are working on a nostalgic, fixed camera angle remake of the first Resident Evil game in Unreal Engine 5.

Back in June, it was officially confirmed that the long-awaited remake of Resident Evil 4 is on the way. Its existence had been circling around in the rumour mill for some time, but come 24 March 2023, it’ll finally be upon us.

Take a look at the trailer for the Resident Evil 4 remake below.

Clearly, that’s not quite enough to satiate nostalgic Resident Evil fans though. As reported by DSOGaming, a team of fans (who go by RE Biohazard on YouTube) are working on a remake of the first Resident Evil game in Unreal Engine 5, and it looks fantastic - take a look below.

"Absolutely beautiful. This is why I love the fans doing stuff like this. This is what RE should be. Current Capcom take notes!” commented LatinaOtaku. “Thank you so much for this it looks amazing,” wrote Jason Borne.

Perhaps the best thing about this remake is that it seems to keep the fixed camera angles from the original game - something which is both super nostalgic, but also incredibly effective in making players feel unsettled and hemmed in when playing. The fixed camera is synonymous with early Resident Evil, but the devs moved onto third and first person perspectives in more recent instalments.

Just because there’s not been a fixed camera RE game in a while doesn’t mean that there’s not demand for one, though. Earlier this year, one fan made some alterations to Resident Evil Village so that it could be played this way - it’s unfortunately not a full mod, but it’s super interesting to see how the game could have worked if it was a couple of decades older.
