Canadian actor Ryan Grantham recently pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of his own mother. Best known for appearing in Riverdale, 24-year-old Grantham portrayed Jeffrey - the young man responsible for killing Luke Perry’s character Fred Andrews in a hit and run. The actor has also had small roles in Supernatural, iZombie, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Grantham’s trial is currently ongoing in the British Columbia Supreme Court. The jury heard how Grantham had reportedly made plans to shoot and kill his 64-year-old mother Barbara Waite. He proceeded with the act on 31 March 2020, allegedly killing his mother with a single gunshot to the head as she played piano. Evidence read out during the trial also revealed further intent to harm beyond this.

According to Complex Canada, Grantham also allegedly had plans to kill Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau. Statements made to police and obtained from Grantham’s personal journals revealed how just one day after his mother’s murder, Grantham allegedly loaded up his car with three guns, 12 Molotov cocktails, ammunition, camping hear, and a map with directions to Trudeau’s residence Rideau Cottage.

Fortunately, Grantham did not make it as far as Rideau Cottage after deciding to turn himself over to Vancouver police. The actor was initially charged with first-degree murder, but later confessed to second-degree murder which carries a mandatory life sentence. The latest evidence given in regards to the plotted assassination of Justin Trudeau has been provided to reflect Grantham’s mental state during the time of the killing.

Barbara Waite’s body was found by daughter Lisa Grantham on 1 April, just one day after the murder. Lisa had grown concerned after not hearing from either her mother or brother. During the trial, she said, “It breaks my heart she struggled so hard … only to be murdered by her own son. [...] She was vulnerable and Ryan gave her no chance to defend herself. It pains me to know he was a danger to her life.”

The Crown is asking for 17 to 18 years of parole ineligibility for Grantham. The trial remains ongoing.
