Insider Suggests 'Bully 2' Was Meant To Be Revealed Last Week, But Something Went Wrong

A sequel had been in the works a number of years.

Apparently, Rockstar Games anticipated a reveal for the long-awaited sequel to Bully, the schoolyard shenanigans simulator that has since become a cult classic. This announcement was set for The Game Awards last week however a spanner seems to have been thrown in the works, so now industry insiders aren't sure where the game has gone.

Back in 2009, the possibility of a Bully 2 was practically a done deal, even though Rockstar Games was willing to give itself a little R&R after the release of Max Payne 3. "We knew that we didn't want to start doing the Bully sequel instantly at that second with [Rockstar Vancouver] – even though it is a property that, like [Max Payne], we adore and might come back to in the future," explained Dan Houser, one of the founders, in 2011. "There was just no impetus to do that then." Yet, seeing the stratospheric success of Grand Theft Auto V, Grand Theft Auto Online, and Red Dead Redemption 2, there still hasn't been any real reason for Rockstar Games to return to Bullworth Academy.

Two years ago, a report claimed that Bully 2 was in the works in 2010. Unfortunately, development did not get off to a flying start after the release of Red Dead Redemption though a "very small slice" of the sequel was made in the RAGE Engine. A lack of internal interest in Bully 2 led to its cancellation which is a shame seeing that players and collaborators would re-enroll in Bullworth Academy in a heartbeat.

So, temper your expectations, but a number of industry insiders have said on social media that they were surprised that Bully 2 was absent at The Game Awards 2021. Tom Henderson (who has been bang on with leaks from Battlefield and Call of Duty) asserted that "information is a bit blurry at the moment" but there was a reveal for the anticipated title planned for the presentation. Moreover, GameInformer's Blake Hester shared the school's crest in a Tweet, adding "new story coming 2 you soon." His account has been switched onto private and a colleague claimed that Hester wasn't suggesting that Bully 2 exists. Personally, I'm not sure what he was suggesting in that case because using the school's crest plus the use of "2" instead of "to." All in all, it's very cryptic right now and we'll have to hold our horses until we get another scoop about the sequel.
