Rockstar Reportedly Canned Remasters Of 'GTA 4' And 'Red Dead Redemption'

If you were to poll gamers on which games they’d like to see remasters of, I’d wager that a good percentage of them would say the original Red Dead Redemption, or Grand Theft Auto IV. Apparently, Rockstar didn’t agree with that.

News coming from a reputable industry leaker says that Rockstar were discussing potentially remastering both of the games, but decided against it for one reason or another.

Thankfully, we have modders and fans helming projects like this one, which lets us see what Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas might look like if it were made in Unreal Engine 5.

The leak comes via Twitter account TezFunz2, who said that “remasters of GTA IV & RDR1 were on the table a few years ago, but Rockstar chose not to proceed with the projects in mind. The poor reception of the Trilogy DE might be a reason behind that decision.”

Ahh well, yes. That might have done it. Fans were most unhappy with the way the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy Deluxe Editions were presented. The game collection was almost pulled from sale on PC during its launch weekend, and Rockstar were flooded with requests for refunds due to glitches and poor performance. It stands to reason that this might have given them cold feet about touching any more of their beloved IPs for the remake treatment.

That timeline as it stands, doesn’t quite add up. The GTA Trilogy DE didn’t release until 2021, and if the other remakes were halted “years ago” there’s clearly a discrepancy there. As it is, there’s no official word from Rockstar that these remakes were ever even in the works, let alone that they were canceled and certainly we’d never get a reason why. So we take the word of TezFunz2 and move.
