A Scott Pilgrim Anime Series Is Being Developed For Netflix

A Scott Pilgrim Anime Series Is Being Developed For Netflix

The series is reportedly being produced by Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski.

Were you feeling a distinct lack of new Scott Pilgrim content in your life? Fear not, because that’s set to change very soon, with a brand new anime series headed to Netflix. What a way to kick off 2022, huh?

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix and UCP, the division of Universal Studio Group behind the likes of Chucky and The Umbrella Academy, are developing the adaptation.

Check out the trailer below for Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game Complete Edition, which made a return on PC and consoles last year.

Bryan Lee O’Malley, the creator of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, will be both the executive producer and writer, alongside BenDavid Grabinski, the showrunner behind the comeback of the Nickelodeon show Are You Afraid of the Dark? Edgar Wright, the director of the 2010 film adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, will also return as an executive producer.

As for the studio behind the animation, it’s going to be Science SARU, whose previous work includes Devilman Crybaby, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, and also two Star Wars: Visions episodes which released last September - Akakiri and T0-B1. The studio’s Eunyoung Choi will serve as the producer of the series, and Abel Gongora as director. So, even though we’ve not seen anything from the upcoming series just yet, with past work like that, there’s no doubt it’s going to look good.

The original 2010 movie adaptation was a romantic action comedy, which starred Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, a musician who has to take down the seven evil exes of his newest girlfriend, Ramona Flowers, all while trying to win a competition to get a record deal. At this point, it’s not known if the anime series will follow the same plot line, or something entirely new.

Scott Pilgrim as a franchise has been having a really great time as of late, actually, with Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game making a grand return in the form of Complete Edition in January last year, after being removed from Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network around the end of 2014 (presumably due to licensing issues). It’s all very exciting anyway, and we’ll just have to stay tuned to see what comes of this latest adaptation.
