'Shang-Chi' Director Wants Jackie Chan For The Sequel

The director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Destin Daniel Cretton, has said that he really wants to cast Jackie Chan in the upcoming sequel - and who can blame him? Apparently, he’d love to have Chan involved in any capacity, be that either opposing or fighting alongside lead actor Simu Liu. Again, completely understandable. This is Jackie Chan we’re talking about.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Cretton was asked what legendary Asian actor he’d like to cast in the upcoming sequel, to which he replied: “I mean, if we could ever get Jackie [Chan] into a movie that would be a lifelong dream of mine.”

Jackie Chan is obviously an absolute icon, but hasn’t made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point. Just last year, the 67-year-old revealed that he’s trying not to “repeat” himself, and be seen as more than just an action star, which clearly could influence potential decisions regarding any Marvel roles.

Cretton actually already paid tribute to Chan in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which released back in September 2021. The director revealed that the film was heavily inspired by kung-fu classics, and more specifically “every Jackie Chan movie ever made”. So maybe that could help persuade the legend to star in the sequel?

Speaking of the sequel, we don’t currently know anything about it, both in regards to what it’ll be about or when it’ll be released, as it was only just confirmed earlier this month. As well as the sequel, though, we can look forward to a new spinoff series, which is arising from a collaboration between Cretton, Marvel Studios, and Hulu’s Onyx Collection. The series is set to arrive on Disney+, but again there's no release date confirmed just yet.

The first movie arrived with a lot of hype when it came out, and earned a very positive audience reception too, so there’s no doubt fans will be excited for any and all new content as we get it. Also, I still can’t get over the fact that Simu Liu may have actually bagged himself the role by straight up asking for it on Twitter. Maybe he ought to try tweeting at Jackie Chan, to see if that goes anywhere? Worth a shot, I reckon.
