'Skyrim' Mod Makes An Identical Gameplay Feature Fantastically Different

'Skyrim' Mod Makes An Identical Gameplay Feature Fantastically Different

Now you can afford to be picky

We love Skyrim. You love Skyrim. We all love Skyrim. That’s why Bethesda keeps on giving us Skyrim, most recently with its PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S Anniversary Edition, released in November 2021. Even ten years on from the initial release of the fifth mainline Elder Scrolls game, players are still finding fresh ways to have fun in the snowy fantasy world of dragons and draugrs - and while this new (to us, at least) mod might seem like small fry compared to the wildest experiments out there (giant cheese wheels, anyone?), it’s something that makes a big difference to any playthrough.

As reported on PC Gamer (cheers, pals), a pair of mods for Skyrim Special Edition - namely Security Overhaul: Lock Variations and Security Overhaul: Add Ons (and here’s a VR version) - finally, finally, bring a little variety to all of those locks you have to sneakily pick on your adventure. Because while the locations, traps, monsters and treasure varies wildly across Skyrim, the lock-pick screen is always the same. Not anymore! Modder ‘powerofthree’ has provided a selection of suitably themed lock models, to suit almost any quest or location in the game.

Look, here’s one of them now - kinda disgusting, but we totally dig it.

And just for fun, here’s another one of the more… gross, actually, lock variations.

The original ‘Lock Variations’ mod covers “Dwemer, Falmer, Snow Elf, Apocrypha, and snowy chests/doors”, whereas the ‘Add Ons’ stretches to Ayleid, Soul Cairn, Nordic and Cold Harbour locks, beside a few more. Extra credits on the Nexus Mods site go to modeller and texture artist Kreiste, and wSkeever for animation, concept art and additional modelling and texturing.

I don’t know about you, but I am all for mods like these that add to the immersion of the Skyrim experience in a very organic style - where the additions don’t feel so different to the original intentions of the original development team. And if you’re in the mood for a little giggle, while you’re here, do point your peepers at our Skyrim Wins & Fails video, below.
