Sonic 2 Movie Gets First Trailer, Open-World 'Sonic Frontiers' Revealed

Sonic fans got not one but two fresh trailers for projects featuring SEGA’s iconic blue blur of a mascot at the 2021 Game Awards. Firstly, what we all know was coming: our first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the movie sequel set to release in March 2022.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will feature Jim Carrey returning as Dr Robotnik, alongside Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails. Human characters include James Marsden’s sheriff Tom, and Tika Sumpter as his wife Maggie. Plot-wise, it sounds very old-school Sonic, with Robotnik out to find a special (possibly chaotic?) emerald with the help of Knuckles, as Sonic and Tails try to stop him. Half-pipe special stages, unconfirmed. (Nobody tell them Knuckles didn’t show up until Sonic 3, yeah?)

I mean, that ring-collecting sound out of the gate? I am in. And fair play to Paramount Pictures for putting Elba’s Knuckles so up front in this teaser, rather than keeping him back for a second preview - the man is clearly having a great time playing what is quite obviously a badass who’ll experience some sort of positive epiphany in act three. Carrey, too, is having a ball (again) as he hams across the screen, this time with a moustache to really do justice to the role. Meanwhile, the idea that Sonic’s been cavorting around the real human world like a spiky vigilante is kinda cool. I mean, he can’t sit around chewing on chili dogs all day, right?

But, there’s more! We’d already heard rumours of a SEGA-made all-new Sonic game that’d be at least partially set in an open world, Breath of the Wild style. We’d heard a name, too: Sonic Rangers. But now we know differently: the game will be called Sonic Frontiers, and it’s not fully open world in design but will feature an open-world area… which sounds more like Pokémon than Zelda, doesn’t it.

In development at SEGA’s Sonic Team in Japan, and set for a PC and console release in late 2022, the gaming giant has confirmed that Frontiers will have the Sonic games series’ “first ever open zone” which players “will have the freedom to explore”. SEGA have also said it’ll be “visually stunning” and while the trailer is only CGI, um, yep…
