After years of lackluster video games that have failed to recapture the essence of his youthful heyday, Sonic The Hedgehog has apparently turned to robbing banks.
Well, a man in a Sonic The Hedgehog mask, but still. This was either a well-meaning fan tribute to SEGA's mascot, or a particularly poor attempt at framing the blue blur. The conspiracy theorist in me suspects the latter.
West Volusian Beacon (via Kotaku) reports that local police were dispatched to respond to an attempted bank robbery in DeLand, Florida on February 2. Witnesses at the scene told authorities that the robber entered the bank wearing a Sonic mask and holding a massive hammer. A tribute to Amy Rose, perhaps?

Those inside the Florida Credit Union at the time recall how the man approached the teller and started to bang on the window with his hammer over and over again, demanding cash.
A second employee confronted the man, at which point he stopped banging on the window and ran before police arrived. Reports suggest he escaped on foot, which makes sense. He was dressed as Sonic, after all.
According to the credit union’s assistant vice president of branch operations, Brian Leatherman, nobody was injured during the attempted robbery and nothing was taken. DeLand police are currently looking into the incident and have asked those who might have seen or heard anything to come forward.
