PlayStation Has Acquired Another Major Studio

PlayStation Has Acquired Another Major Studio

PlayStation's Hermen Hulst has said that the next lot of games for the PS5 "wouldn’t have been made anywhere else."

Last week, Valkyrie Entertainment was snapped up by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and will be supporting "key PlayStation Studios franchises" with past, present and future "invaluable contributions" to the company's portfolio of titles.

Established in 2002, you might not know the name immediately. However, Valkyrie Entertainment's team has worked on Sony's Twisted Metal series, Sucker Punch Productions' Infamous Second Son, Sony Santa Monica's God of War and the anticipated God of War: Ragnarok. As well as these, the developer has ties to other companies with their contributions to Warner Bros.' Batman: Arkham Origins, Injustice 2, and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. More recently, it's been credited on Xbox Game Studios' Halo Infinite and actually has had a long-time collaboration with Microsoft on the first five Forza Motorsport games.

The only game that it has developed and released on its ownsome is Guns Up!, a free-to-play tactical strategy game for the PlayStation 4. This acquisition rounds out Sony's quest to soak up as many studios as possible in 2021, after Fabrik Games, Firesprite, Nixxes Software, Bluepoint and Housemarque. Returnal was one of our standout games from this year and it totally checks out that the company would want to secure even more experiences like this in the future for PS5 players. With Valkyrie Entertainment "making invaluable contributions to key PlayStation Studios franchises", the future is looking extremely bright for the next generation of the console.

"We are, at the end of the day, a creator-led organization. Which to me means that we want to find the best possible development studios in the world and help them passionately pursue their ideas," said Hermen Hulst in an interview in the summer and also confirmed that there are more than 25 games in development across its studios with half of these being new intellectual properties. "I want PlayStation Studios to be fiercely daring, to take risks. I want us to continue to embrace the legacy of PlayStation, pushing the boundaries of gaming, keep making games that matter. Games that, probably, wouldn’t have been made anywhere else," he continued. Including God of War Ragnarok, we'll have to wait and see what Valkyrie Entertainment is working on.
