Sony Quietly Fixes Console-Bricking PlayStation 5 Error

Phew

Sony has quietly resolved a concerning issue that could have ultimately rendered the PlayStation 5 unplayable for gamers around the world.

Earlier this year video game preservation Twitter account Does It Play? Alerted everyone to the PlayStation 4’s Error CE 34878-0 message. This was an issue that would occur when the console's internal battery clock eventually dies. Given that internal battery clocks do not last indefinitely, every digital file on the console could become inaccessible without being able to reconnect to the server, effectively rendering every game you picked up over the years completely unplayable.

Dataminer Lance McDonald explained in greater detail that "if your PS4 clock battery dies, all your games die". While the battery be replaced, the larger issue was having to reconnect to the server to get all your digital games back. While it's highly unlikely PlayStation would ever get rid of the PlayStation Network, we were faced with a possible future in which the service was pulled, leaving us unable to access our library of games. Fortunately, Sony eventually fixed in a recent PlayStation 4 firmware update.

Now, it seems the issue has also been addressed on PlayStation 5. A recent video shared by Hikikomori Media shows the PS5 loading games without the CMOS battery installed, something it wasn’t able to do before. Naturally, this means that when your PS5’s internal battery finally kicks the bucket (and we’re talking decades from now, to be clear), you’ll still be able to take it from the attic and boot up Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart if you want to.
