Andrew Garfield Spider-Man Return Being Considered By Sony, Says Insider

The future of the Spider-Man franchise has never been more exciting. Spider-Man: No Way Home finally opened up the multiverse in a big way, inviting classic characters from older superhero movies into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time.

Assuming you heeded my spoiler warning at the top of the page, you probably won't be too surprised to learn that Tom Holland's incumbent wallcrawler was joined for No Way Home's thrilling climax by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, reprising their roles as Peter Parker and Peter Parker respectively.

While it was great to see Maguire and Garfield back, it was the latter Spider-Man who seems to have really stolen hearts. It's a matter of public record that Garfield genuinely loves the character of Spider-Man, and the franchise falling apart and being rebooted prematurely during his tenure after the disastrous The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ultimately broke his heart.

No Way Home gave Garfield a second chance, then. One he tackled with an infectious enthusiasm that already has the internet calling for Sony to greenlight The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and give Garfield the third solo movie he was so cruelly denied all those years ago.

The good news is that according to new reports, Sony is apparently considering exactly that. Movie scooper Daniel Richtman claims he's heard from sources that "Andrew might come back", and that further projects with his version of the character are in various stages of development. Take this with a grain of salt for now, but it's an exciting possibility, no?

It sounds like a win-win, in all honesty. Sony would get a Spider-Man that isn't tied down to the MCU and can interact with characters like Tom Hardy's Venom and Jared Leto's Morbius, while Marvel could continue on with Tom Holland's Spidey saga.

As for whether audiences would have an appetite for two big screen Spider-Men existing at the same time? Well, given that the webhead is the most profitable and popular superhero of all time, I'd wager that Sony could probably pull it off.
