Spider-Man Star Tom Holland Explains Why He Isn’t The New Face Of The MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a very different place than it was 10 years ago. The Avengers are seemingly finished. Iron Man and Black Widow are dead. Captain America is... somewhere. Scarlet Witch had a breakdown and held an entire town hostage for months.

Clearly one day The Avengers will rise from the ashes, but the question remains: who will lead them? And in a more meta sense, who will be the face of this universe now that Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark has bowed out?

In a recent interview with GQ, Avengers Endgame director Joe Russo said that he believes Tom Holland's Peter Parker has definitely become the new face of the MCU, adding that the character is very much at the forefront of the universe in every sense.

“Tom is stepping into the role that Robert Downey once occupied for Marvel, which is the favorite character, and in a lot of ways the soul of the Marvel universe," Russo said.

That's a lot of pressure - both for Tom Holland the young actor and Peter Parker the young hero. GAMINGbible recently caught up with Holland ahead of the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and asked how he feels about Russo's comments. The Spidey star isn't quite as sure that he's ready for all that, and suggested that there are others who could - and should - step up first.

"I'm not sure if that's entirely the case," Holland said of Russo's belief that Spidey is the new face of the MCU. "Obviously I'm very appreciative. Joe is a very good friend of mine. And yeah, there's a bit of pressure there.

"But when you're in the MCU, you're never alone. You know, and I think before I become the face of the franchise, we've got to remember that we have people like Star Lord [Chris Pratt], and Thor [Chris Hemsworth]. There's loads of different people that I think should probably step up to the plate and be the leader.

"Peter Parker, at the end of the day, has just graduated high school. So he's still a kid. But you know, I'm hugely grateful that Joe would say something like that. I mean, it's always great having someone as awesome as the Russo brothers in your corner. So yeah, so it's pretty great."
